The movie is not your routine shoot-'em-up action adventure but an intricate weaving of people, conventions, and personal relationships.

A truly great film - one which i watched in my early teens and introduced me to Japanese ideals of honour and tradition. All at once sensitive and violent - it's served superbly by two great central performances from Robert Mitchum and Ken Takakura. A must-see.

Incredible. Sydney Pollack brings home a stunning clash of Japanese and American cultures that shows what honor is and the high cost it comes with.

My first introduction to Yakuza films, albeit a flawed one. America's first attempt to do a Ningkyo-eiga type of film was done admirably enough, but Takakura has been in much better films like Showa Zankyoden and the Abashiri Prison series.

Moves slow. There are films out there that, I think, do the whole East mets West cultural-thing better. Still, Mitchum, especially older Mitchum, is always badass. Great group of talent (Towne, Schrader, Pollak) coming together to make just an average neo-noir/samuria flick.
