Filmed like a 1930s horror flick, this one works due to the actors and story, which takes Lovecraft's tale and makes it more grand. The budget is low to the special effects are truly awful.

Eccezionale adattamento cinematografico dell'omonimo racconto di H.P. Lovecraft. Forse i Mi-Go in computer grafica alla fine stonano un pochino, ma il film non deluderà gli appassionati dei Miti di Cthulhu.

A wonderful adaptation of a Lovecraft story from the same people who brought us the excellent silent treatment of "The Call of Cthulhu." This time, it's the Mi-Go, the fungi from Yuggoth, out to conquer the world, and it's up to Miskatonic University Professor of Folklore Albert Wilmarth to stop them... if he can! What's particularly strong about this film is that it infuses the atmospheric horror of Lovecraft with the fun that those involved obviously had making it. Shot in black and white and bringing together both modern sensibilities and the feel of a 1950's B-flick, The Whisperer in Darkness is a real joy to watch, and it works whether or not you're familiar with Lovecraft's work. Even if you know the original short story upon which this is based, this one will suck you in and keep you in suspenseful entertainment every minute. It's a do-not-miss for fans of all things Lovecraftian!

Only a playful horror picture, where Call of Cthulhu was actually a great & largely successful experiment; but it still gets to the heart of why Lovecraft works.

While not as polished or stylized feeling as Call of Cthulhu (I think that may be due to Call of Cthulhu's photography and writing) this film still completely pulls off that great lovecraftian 1930s film vibe. This one has some great science fiction aspects to it as well. If Sean Branney were to put out more films like these I would guarantee my viewer ship. Very captivating and spooky story about horror from beyond the stars.
