Drifter Cole Harden is accused of stealing a horse and faces hanging by self-appointed Judge Roy Bean, but Harden manages to talk his way out of it by claiming to be a friend of stage star Lillie Langtry, with whom the judge is obsessed, even though he has never met her. Tensions rise when Harden comes to the defense of a group of struggling homesteaders who Judge Bean is trying to drive away.

Well done western directed by William Wyler and starring Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan. Cooper did a nice job but Brennan was excellent in a worthy Oscar winning role (his third). I thought it lost some steam near the middle, but the rest of the film was very good and it had a nice ending. I need to check out more films with Brennan, this is only the second one I've seen.

Walter Brennan is great as "Judge" Roy Bean and Gary Cooper just can't give a bad performance. And although not nearly as good as High Noon, The Westerner deserves a lot more accolades than it has been given in the present day. Plus Tiomkin's score, Toland's cinematography, and Wyler's direction makes this movie a true treasure. Also, it's kind of interesting to see Dana Andrews with no lines.

Solid western from director William Wyler. Though colorful Judge Roy Bean is the famous historical figure of the story, played by the great Walter Brennan, the story is more about drifter Gary Cooper who comes to town to oppose Bean's policy against homesteaders. The script and acting are terrific, but I have to say that I was most struck by the gorgeous black & white photography by the brilliant Gregg Toland, who'd the following year go on the shoot Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane". A must see for western, Cooper, Brennan or Toland fans!

unheralded western of its time or any time for that matter. cooper and brennan make a formidable pair on the screen. walter was rarely better as the conniving, ill-tempered law west of the pecos and cooper was in true form as the clever winsome cowhand who, like scheherazade, spun his own tales of the impossibly lovely langtree to extend his stay on this mortal coil. plenty of action and snappy repartee provide for great entertainment.
