White Island (aka Whakaari) is actually a somewhat dormant volcano in New Zealand. In 2019, two groups of tourists took boats to the island for an exploration. While there, it erupted leaving panic and disaster. The majority of the story is told thru interviews with several survivors. There is a tiny bit of video shot during the catastrophe, but mostly there's lots of recreated footage and endless shots of the smoky aftermath. Director Rory Kennedy has managed to create some emotional response from the interviews, giving the doc personal perspectives, but after the blast's initial immediacy, the tension does slow.

The choice to limit the film’s scope also limits its impact; but the heart of “The Volcano” is still effectively harrowing, showing the moment when awe at nature’s wonders turns into mortal terror.
