The Unholy (2021)

Alice is a young hearing-impaired girl who, after a supposed visitation from the Virgin Mary, is inexplicably able to hear, speak and heal the sick. As word spreads and people from near and far flock to witness her miracles, a disgraced journalist hoping to revive his career visits the small New England town to investigate. When terrifying events begin to happen all around, he starts to question if these phenomena are the works of the Virgin Mary or something much more sinister.

This religious-themed horror based around the phenomena of Marian apparitions has an intriguing premise but cuts too many corners in its catechism.

Sam Raimi is a producer here, and it’s hard not to think about how he might have mined this material both for provocation and for fright; his “Drag Me to Hell” remains the gold standard of how to scare the heck out of an audience within the restrictions of PG-13. What we get instead here is a tepid little chiller with an overqualified cast.

It's just not very good, simply put If I had to summarize: It feels like every other dry, awkward horror movie.. It's just not worth your time.

The Unholy was a really creepy and scary movie, one of my favorite movies of the year. The performances from Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Cricket Brown, Marina Mazepa, William Sadler, and Katie Aselton were excellent. The visual effects were awesome, so cool and creepy. The makeup and hairstyling was outstanding especially the Mary Elnor makeup on Marina Mazepa. Overall a pretty enjoyable movie.

Writer-director Evan Spiliotopoulos barely capitalizes on the luridly sacrilegious implications of the film’s premise.
