The movie exerts an eerie grip, with echoes of Bresson, Bergman and Dreyer, but is utterly distinctive: a vision of a world going inexorably into a final darkness.

Tarr has a talent and a vision, but he doesn't have much to say here. It's impressive and hollow at the same time.

The movie is too beautiful to be described as an ordeal, but it is sufficiently intense and unyielding that when it is over, you may feel, along with awe, a measure of relief. Which may sound like a reason to stay away, but is exactly the opposite.

The kind of film that makes most other films seem pointless. Tarr has crafted a tedious, unrelenting, and personal work that makes the viewer reevaluate their views on what a film can be. This is Tarr's final film, and although that is sad, he sure went out with a bang. Never has a director had such an uncompromising vision and approach to filmmaking. His name belongs alongside the greats: Tarkovsky, Fellini, Bergman, Kieslowski, etc. This film is an enduring cinema masterpiece that bookmarks the end of the career of one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. It is almost a certainty that this will be near, or at, the top of my list at the end of the decade.
