35-year-old Morris Bliss is clamped in the jaws of New York City inertia: he wants to travel but has no money, he needs a job but has no prospects, he still shares an apartment with his widowed father, and the premature death of his mother has left him emotionally walled up. When he finds himself wrapped up in an awkward relationship with Stephanie, the 18-year-old daughter of a former classmate, Morris quickly discovers his static life unraveling and opening up in ways that are long overdue.

I only really rented it because of Michael C. Hall, whom I love in "Dexter". But this movie is as aimless as the main protagonist. I really had no idea where it was going and the ending felt incomplete and forced. Like they knew they spent an hour-and-a-half building up to what is supposed to be a breakthrough time for Morris but they didn't know what to do with it, so it ends with little more than a dull thud as it fails to really make any kind of meaningful statement. Skip it.

The Trouble with Bliss, the new dramedy directed by Michael Knowles and starring Michael C. Hall, is a rare motion picture. It is rare because it doesn't manipulate, it doesn't tell you how to feel or what to feel. It is a belated coming of age story but it is not the kind that hits you over the head. It's subtler than that, indeed, it is stripped bare. And it is this bareness, this unadorned aesthetic, that makes The Trouble with Bliss a gem. It is a sincere and endearing modern tale about a man named Morris Bliss (played by Michael C. Hall) who feels stuck in his life and wants to become unstuck. Watching The Trouble with Bliss made me feel like everything-- even my most wild imaginings-- is somehow possible. That I just need to be brave. And in this film, Morris Bliss showed me how.
