In postwar Vienna, Austria, Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns, arrives penniless as a guest of his childhood chum Harry Lime, only to learn he has died. Martins develops a conspiracy theory after learning of a "third man" present at the time of Harry's death, running into interference from British officer Major Calloway, and falling head-over-heels for Harry's grief-stricken lover, Anna.

It's an exciting experience, dazzling and entertaining and thought-provoking. I saw it at Cinema 21 last week and immediately wanted to see it again. I couldn't, so I started researching and read everything I could about it. It's truly great.

An interloper in a reluctant-police procedural shot by genius DP Krasker, scripted by Greene, starring Cotten & Welles, expertly directed by Reed. Watch the film. Chide your Swiss friends with the cuckoo-clock speech.

It isn't easy when you're up against the likes of Reed, writer Graham Greene, and producer David O. Selznick, but Welles still manages to dominate this 1949 film, both as an actor and as a stylistic influence. What's missing is the Welles content.

I can see why some have called this an "accidentally" great film - few of its best strokes relate to the same vision - but it's a great film nonetheless.

Fantastic film noir thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat whether you've seen it before or not. Great lighting, score and camera work. An instant classic.
