In postwar Vienna, Austria, Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns, arrives penniless as a guest of his childhood chum Harry Lime, only to learn he has died. Martins develops a conspiracy theory after learning of a "third man" present at the time of Harry's death, running into interference from British officer Major Calloway, and falling head-over-heels for Harry's grief-stricken lover, Anna.

The Third Man remains among the most consummate of British thrillers: Reed and Greene’s sardonic vision of smiling corruption is deliciously realised with superb location work, a roster of seasoned Viennese performers and the raised eyebrow of Anton Karas’ jaunty zither score.

Really pointless to try and describe what makes this film a classic,but I will say that Cotten, Valli, and Welles all turn in great performances and the camerawork is great as well. Must see for any and all serious film lovers.

Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton are fantastic in this brilliant and puslating noir mystery steeped in shadows, unnerving angles, and suspense. One of the greats.

Legitimately a perfect movie. I'm talking top ten material here, easily. Brilliant direction from Carol Reed, flawless screenplay, and some fantastick performances, with Joseph Cotten at the heart of it all. His love for Alida Valli, while unreturned is so honest, and the emotional soul of this film. And of Orson Welles is absoluitely incredible in his few minutes of screentime. he also has one of the greatest entrances here in screen history. I don't think I could ever praise this one enough.

Throughout the film the sense of Vienna as a frazzled echo of its glorious past is underpinned by Reed's greatest trouvaille – the discovery of Anton Karas's zither melodies, used as the only musical accompaniment. Half-jaunty, half-melancholic, they epitomise, like the film itself, a world gone sadly to seed.
