In college, Dex was the big man on campus. Ten years later, now an overweight kindergarten teacher, Dex is immune to the shocked stares of the women who were once his conquests. While trying to pick up the bartender, he is struck by the gorgeous Syd. Through a series of circumstances, Syd and Dex are thrown together and he soon finds himself questioning his belief in all things Steve.

The "Steve" referred to is Steve McQueen. Donal Logue (sic) is so good as the has-been college stud turned sad-sack that he makes this somewhat ordinary movie into something very warm and funny.

The movie starts out great with some valuable dating philosophy for any guy. But the movie takes a bit of a nose-dive at the end when those philosophies get turned on their head. That said, Tao of Steve is still one of my favorite "underground" movies that I recommend to anyone looking for something new that they haven't heard of before. Before watching this, take a quick read through "The Ladder Theory", you won't regret it.

In his college days Dex (Donal Logue) was a slim, cool, smooth-talking ladies' man. A decade later he's an overweight, underachieving kindergarten teacher, but he's honed his pick-up technique into a way of life--a mix of zen, tough-guy cool, and college philosophy he and his buddies call "the Tao of Steve," named after the manly triad of Steve Austin (a.k.a. the Six Million Dollar Man), Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord's unflappable cop on Hawaii Five-0), and the king of all Steves: Steve McQueen. Santa Fe is populated with his one-night stands, but then he runs into Syd (Greer Goodman), a smart, sexy old classmate with an arsenal of sharp retorts, at a college reunion.

This film gets its bite from the thought-out dialogue which creates both a sense of realness and honesty. It's as much a story about self-love as it is about falling in love.
