The Sweatbox (2002)

Trudie Styler, a documentarian, had been allowed to film the production of 'Kingdom of the Sun'/'The Emperor's New Groove' as part of the deal that originally brought her husband Sting to the project. As a result, Styler recorded much of the struggle, controversy, and troubles that went into making the picture on film (including when producer Fullmer called Sting to inform the pop star that his songs were being deleted from the film). Styler's completed documentary, The Sweatbox, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 13, 2002. Disney owns the rights to the documentary and has not released it on home video or DVD.

An extraordinarily candid look at the state of Disney animation in the late 1990s, this documentary details the tumultuous and unpleasant road that eventually led to the creation of THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE. It's a pretty unflinching depiction of how extremely creative people can disagree to the point of watering down and severely compromising their original visions and intentions. Disney has not made this film publicly/officially available, and it is certainly true that several members of the Disney brass do not come across terribly well, but as a documentation of the struggles inherent in filmmaking (of any sort), and as an honest dissection of how a project can completely fall apart, the film is compelling and fascinating, and should be sought out.

Chances are that it's only going to be in a couple of film festivals and vanish into the ether. What a bummer because it is a treat!

The beginning of the film really excited me as I really had no idea that one of my favourite films of my childhood, The Emperor's New Groove, started out as something completely different, and arguably possibly even more interesting. It's sad that the project got canned, but in a way the film gives a nice in depth look at the editing, critique and analysis of how a Disney animated film is made. It's not as brutally honest as it could have been (the ending side tracked towards just shameless self promotion of "Groove") and I really wish they showed more of the Kingdom of the Sun, but I guess the Disney execs really did think Atlantis, Home on the Range, and Chicken Little were going to all be great home runs, right?

Deserves comparison to the masterpieces of the form, films like Hearts of Darkness and Burden of Dreams, where the focus is on the human toll of the process and not the end result.

Moderately interesting look into the retooling process of filmmaking.
