This is the first time i watched Wen Jiang's film, so far so good, quite special about the plot and editing skill, and Hisaishi Joe 's music is wonderful all along the time, maybe better focus on the music and sound in this movie.

I really like the mother and son's part. good editing and story telling skills.quite unique performance. however, it is totally different from the follow part of the movie. I can't get a very clear match up with another 2 story lines.

i was in quite a lost in the very first half of the film. unlike his previous work "The Heat of the Sun", this one was made confusing deliberately, both in terms of the story plot and the message it's conveying. i was still full of questions in my mind at the time i walked out from the cinema. However, even though it is so confusing, the ambiance and the editing of the film show that Jiang Wen is absolutely a director that is like no others.

Walking out of the theater late last night, it was difficult to decide exactly how I felt about this movie. I want to wait for it to come out on DVD and watch it again. That said, I am an unabashed huge fan of Jiang Wen and felt it was worth the (full) price I paid. I'm not so surprised Jiang went home from Venice empty handed, this is not a movie you see once and come out with a solid opinion on. Plus, it may have strayed too far into that mid/late 90s trend in Chinese movies of being overly arty...In any case, an excellent film!
