The first time I saw this on late-night cable, I'd never heard of Russell Crowe. Not only was I absolutely convinced that he was a gay man in real life (wrong, grasshopper -- it's called tremendous acting), I also knew that he was going to be a HUGE star. Happily, I was right. This movie is based on a stage play and it tends to get preachy and is, well, stagey, but the story and acting are both so great, who cares. A tearjerker.

I really love this film. First I heard of Russell Crowe. Wonder if he'd still do a film like this now.

The novelty of this Australian working class comedy of manners is that sexual orientation is not a problem. Father and gay son (nicely played by Russell Crowe) enjoy the kind of warm, amiable relationship that's unheard of and unseen in American films of the early 1990s.

A really nice story about a father and son and their lives. Some really sad, touching parts too.

One of the best gay movies ever! Russell Crowe is faboulous as Jeff. Jack Thompson is also faboulous as Harry (Jeff's father.) I like how they both narrate the movie by talking directly to the camera. It gives it a stagey, yet comical feel to the movie!
