The Street with No Name (1948)

After two gang-related killings in "Center City," a suspect (who was framed) is arrested, released on bail...and murdered. Inspector Briggs of the FBI recruits a young agent, Gene Cordell, to go undercover in the shadowy Skid Row area (alias George Manly) as a potential victim of the same racket. Soon, Gene meets Alec Stiles, neurotic mastermind who's "building an organization along scientific lines." Stiles recruits Cordell, whose job becomes a lot more dangerous.

This dreamscape of vice is the American cinematic paradise, a visual and aural carnival appropriate to the gang leader played by Richard Widmark in high psychotic gear.

A pretty decent film noir, but its lacking the sleaze factor of other noirs that I've seen and enjoyed more. I did enjoy the obnoxious and too straight faced narration, and hey, Ed Begley Sr. is in this!

The Street With No Name is a neat little film noir given a documentary like vibe right from the get go. The film lets the viewer known that it's based off a true story straight from the files of the FBI and used as many authentic location and people as possible. Richard Widmark is the real star of this show. In this, his second film role, he absolutely nails his role as the boss, Alec Stiles. He's got the perfect demeaning, evil tone that complements every facet of this solid little film. Without Widmark I think I'd drop my score a half point or so, but he really puts this film into the category of really worth seeing. The story isn't bad either with the whole undercover, who's the rat, set-up routine. Definitely check this one out if you're looking for something new in the genre.

Factual and almost documentary-like in the beginning, this is the CSI of the 1940s, featuring on-site filming of the FBI's actual crime-solving tools and laboratory. But soon we find a character with which to identify with -- an FBI agent (Mark Stevens) infiltrating a city gang which has already committed two murders in the town. But there is a mole in the local police department and the crime boss is getting hot on our man's trail. Will our FBI spy beat him to the punch? There's a symbolic twist in the end, and a good sense of increasing pace. I enjoyed this one a lot!

...engaging thanks to some expectedly hard-bitten dialogue and Widmark's charismatic, sinister performance.
