The Second Woman (1950)

In flashback from a 'Rebecca'-style beginning: Ellen Foster, visiting her aunt on the California coast, meets neighbor Jeff Cohalan and his ultramodern clifftop house. Warned that Jeff could be dangerous, Ellen fears that he's in danger, as the menacing atmosphere darkens.

'The Second Woman' blends aspects of 'Rebecca' and 'Gaslight' into a savvy, neo-Gothic style, there's even an ultramodern, Manderley-like pile of memories high above the crashing ocean... The Pine Cliff Paranoia--"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderly again..." Wait, wrong movie. "Today," Ellen Foster tells us, "I looked upon the cliff where Hilltop stood. I can still see its hanging roofs against the Cyprus trees. But Hilltop is no more. There is only a scar of jutting rock where once its windows glittered in the California sun."... An Intelligent "B" Mystery-Gothic elements enhance superior psychological thriller!!

An intriguing psychological suspense noir starring Robert Young as a man who begins to doubt his sanity after a series of freak accidents following the death of his fiance. With the help of his new girlfriend, played by Betsy Drake, Young realizes that he is not insane but that the accidents were causes by an enemy who is out to destroy him. Nice noir cinematography, interesting plot, and a surprise ending. Film quality is only fair, though.

Good psychological thriller about a man who thinks he being driven insane... or is he really just crazy? The mystery is clever and complex and keeps the viewer guessing until the end, with a nice little twist the cap off the film. Performance from Young is good but the acting of his supporting cast wavers and the direction is somewhat un-involving, but the plot itself will keep you intrigued.

Betsy Drake and Robert Young as a possible romantic couple haunted by the death (the previous year) of his fiancee in an auto accident. Maybe the townsfolk are right when they suggest that he might've been driven bonkers? Shades of Hitchcock's Rebecca haunt this psycho-drama as well as Tchaikovski's 2nd Concerto. And the waves pounding the shoreline ... is there any wonder about the man's sanity? And the woman, could she be in danger? Decent, if not a memorable thriller.
