The Sacrament (2014)

Two journalists set out to document their friend's journey to reunite with his estranged sister. They track her to an undisclosed location where they are welcomed into the remote world of "Eden Parish," a self-sustained rural utopia composed of nearly two hundred members and overseen by a mysterious leader known only as "Father." It quickly becomes evident to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. Eden Parish harbors a twisted secret. What started as just another documentary shoot soon becomes a fight for survival.

Another absorbing thriller/horror from Ti West, this time using the events of the tragic Jonestown Massacre as inspiration (well, it follows those events so closely it might as well be a documentary). At first it's a terrific slow-burner and if you know about Jonestown, a truly horrific finale. All the performances are great and believable especially Gene Jones as the 'father' who leads the cult known as 'Eden Parish'. It also makes excellent use of the hand-held format.

Ti West has a knack for creating atmosphere in a horror setting, without necessarily being in a horror film. Here's a fine example, by creating the idea of a family reunion and turning the family idea on it's head through the exploration into cult psychosis and the belief that there's always a better way, West fills you with genuine chills. Recommended..

One of the better found footage horror movies, from a pretty solid horror director in Ti West, The Sacrament is a creepy look on a small isolated community, which is pretty much a cult, and how the cult leader can manipulate his community.

"The Sacrament" is often slow, yes, but it is all necessary build-up that leads us to a pulse-pounding horror film with an eerily realistic story.
