This movie is all about imagery, and in that it succeeded as an excellant work of art. The story is a little bit confusing, but it's interesting enough to draw you in and bond you with the characters.

Shinaki really knows how to make a complex movie! Wonder ful once you understand it!

Yeah, this is some really, really nice animation. I think the plot is a little vague, the whole civil war mad science thing is never explained and doesn't really seem to influence the plot at all. Actually, all the antagonism is worthless and the characters motivations ends up being quite shallow. Saying that, its odd that the film is so powerful and in the end enjoyable.

Reminiscent of a Miyazaki movie in it's imagery and d'aww character interactions, plus some contemporary sci-fi to make it even better.

shinkai is definitely the next miyazaki. stunning photography and composition, a stellar plot, and a great pace make for a superb film.
