Probably the funniest animated gem released in a long while and it did much to include the oddest of trios, ruthless pirates hated by Queen Victoria, who is beloved by scientist Charles Darwin. Aardman should really do more work, everytime they release a motion picture, the first thought that comes to mind is "I'm gonna hate this movie", but you wind up loving it. Every time.

The stop-motion artists at Aardman Animations take a step back from their usual British whimsy for this rough-and-tumble comic adventure on the high seas. The film, directed by Peter Lord and written by Gideon Defoe, is centered on a hard-luck pirate (voiced impeccably by Hugh Grant) whoâ(TM)s out to finally win the Pirate of the Year Award. Queen Victoria, Charles Darwin, Jane Austen, and the Elephant Man are among the clever list of characters who are woven into the Pirate Captainâ(TM)s quest, and the action is beautifully staged, delightful, and exciting.

Sly jokes come as fast and furious as the imaginative visuals that overflow like an exploding booty of goofy action. Every nook and cranny of the movie seeps with humorous purpose.

What makes a fantastic animated film is when there are jokes for kids and jokes for adults to understand but not kids. When an animated movie has that, I am very happy because it shows intelligence. That is something that The Pirates! Band of Misfits has plenty of. Some laugh out loud moments make this film lots of fun to watch and Aardman certainly show that they are one of the premier animation studios in the business up there with early Disney and Pixar.
