Not the best musical I have ever seen, but not the disaster it's constantly labled as. Great set pieces with a story that's lacking. Not the worst way to spend an evening.

The song and dance numbers were amazing. I was hesitant solely because I think Cole Porter--while a great musician--should have hired a lyricist. The lyrics to songs like "Mack the Black" were laughable. Although, I had to eat my own words the next day when it was still stuck in my head. Gene Kelly is gorgeous, Judy Garland is amazing... it was the plot I could have done without. I've been told by people whose opinions I trust that if I were to watch the movie as if it was one continuous musical number I would have a different reaction. The song and dance numbers are enough to get me to watch the movie again, so I'll withhold more judgments until I've had a second viewing.

There's more to this movie than meets the eye. It's Vincente Minnelli's oft-overlooked masterpiece, a stunning film that toys with the boundaries of genre and artifice even as it combines the magnificent talents of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. The songs are catchy, the dialog is snappy, the plot is creative. Its commentary on desire and fiction especially appeals to me as a fan of movies and a reader of romance novels...

The donkey scene,...or I think it's a donkey scene...LOL is sort of well,...kind of a ridiculous scene to have. But, overall, it was terrific!
