The Passing (1992)

Internationally acclaimed and award-winning video installation artist Bill Viola juxtaposes personal pictures of his mother's death with images of his own son's birth to explore foundational and potent themes of beginnings and endings, the cycle of life and the movement of generations. Profound meditation on the inevitabilites of life. Viola's videotapes so often depict the sensation of almost drowning or being surrounded by water, which Viola stated was a very personal feeling. The human figure submerged in water seems to juxtapose with birth, coinciding with death, and ruminates upon the anxiety of helplessness, and yet the trappings of 'fear' relating to everflowing time and transience almost disintegrate into a kind of acceptance, delving through the dark in understanding of a personal spirituality. In essence, there is much to say about this important work because it encompasses and surrounds the central paths of life, submerges, like water, the sensation of being a foetus in the womb.
