Ranks among the best crime films of the late 1970s...and that puts the flick among some rather impressive company.

The Onion Field is a serious and most uncompromising movie. It lacks, however, the sort of disciplined craft that might have made it a powerful and affecting one.

Another and probably the best adaptationof a Wambaugh novel. left Police departments with the phrase "never give up your gun"!

Solid, if a bit dry, adaptation of Joseph Wambaugh's true crime classic. It gets off to an underwhelming start, and goes soft towards the end - but when the complexities of the characters start to come out, it coalesces into a compelling look at the criminal justice system and the lives it affects. The cast is strong, with the notable exception of John Savage, who for some reason mumbles his way through his role.

Janet Maslin 18 Nov 1993

This is a strong, affecting story but it's also a straggly one, populated by tangential figures and parallel plotlines; the criminals' histories are every bit as convoluted and fascinating as those of the policemen they abducted. Even the courtroom drama is unusually complicated, introducing a new legal team with each new trial.
