Connery can act like a muh fucka. Lumet's direction is superb quite a disturbing little film.

It's a really difficult watch. Overly long scenes, a hopeless, miserable atmosphere, and you can clearly see Sean Connery trying very hard to break with his Bond image. But I think I'll keep the DVD, it's an interesting movie for sure.

Interesting but uneven crime drama from director Sidney Lumet. Lumet crafts some effective scenes, and there's a lot of strong atmosphere - but it gets off to an extremely slow start, and remains awkwardly-paced throughout - and the story is just never quite as compelling as it should be. Sean Connery gives a superb performance in one of his most complex roles, and his scenes with Trevor Howard and Ian Bannen do reach a compelling intensity, but overall the film is just too uneven to be considered any kind of classic.
