The Odessa File (1974)

Following the suicide of an elderly Jewish man, investigative journalist Peter Miller sets out to hunt down an SS Captain and former concentration camp commander. In doing so he discovers that, despite allegations of war crimes, the former commander has become a man of importance in industry in post-war Germany, protected from prosecution by a powerful organisation of former SS members called Odessa.

Adapting a novel for the screen is always difficult because you will always have to omit certain segments that make the story great. I found this to be true in this adaptation for Frederick Forsyth's story. Had I not read the book, I think this would have been an intriguing 70's thriller but I found myself waiting for a few big sequences that never happened. Still, Voight was perfect in the lead role as was Schell as the Nazi. I liked how the flashbacks were shot in black and white and also enjoyed the sequence in the print shop and the finale.

Pretty good film- I hadnt seen it in a few years. Must-see for anyone who has studied the SS.

Thoughtful thriller with a great atmosphere. The first movie to highlight Nazi recreation of the jew atrocities with black & white footage, of course aped years later by Schindler's List.
