Moll's restraint gives way to a tastefully overwrought checklist of Gothic imagery. In the cloistered shadows and the harsh Castilian sun, the visuals are handsome, even as the movie threatens to tip into parody.

If you were hoping for a return to form for director Dominik Moll, your prayer has not been answered.

A little slow, and quite without a climax. Disappointing, by French cinema standards. The comparison to something like The Woman In White, in which there are scares-a-plenty, would be misleading. This film never really gets started.

However Pious, However Holy, Temptation hunts us all.

Colin Covert 07 Mar 2013

If only director Dominik Moll (who has clearly studied his Luis Buñuel) had not staged this bitter psychological horror story at half speed.
