The Miracle of Bern (2003)

This is as much a film about the post war reconstruction of Germany as it is about Football. It tackles the difficult issues of men returning from Soviet Prisons, and the then new division of Germany into east and west. If anyone was studying this period of history, or wants to understand the embryonic development of post war Germany, then this is the film. It also is a rather good story about a remarkable football team and the recovery of lost national pride too.

Who says you can't make a decent movie about football? Forget Goal and all that bollocks - this is the way to do it for any self-respectin fan...

It's always hard to make a movie about football. The sports is not easy to depict on film, the live excitement hardly ever reproducable. Yet Wortmann manages to do that with ease and by presenting the 1954 World Cup heroes from Germany with a human touch and by introducing a little, fictitious boy that holds the (rather cheesy) storyline together. Still, the makers put much effort into recreating the spirit of the Fifties and the casting was done with a hunch for detail. But what I miss most... They could've shown more football from that tournament.

Excellent. The story of the father returning home is difficult and touching - but the backbone of the movie is the love and passion for soccer.

It's interesting that the Germans describe West Germanys' 54 world cup win as a miracle, and then passing it off with several innocent theories in this film such as "it rained", "West Germany had secret lightweight studded boots", and "a soppy little kid, who was the lucky charm of the winning goal scorer, turned up just in time". In fact the real reason that West Germany won in 54 was, as several retired Hungarian players admitted, that they paid them to lose. And while i'm on the subject, under modern rules, they would have gone out in the first round on goal difference but this hadn't been invented yet. Still, it wasn't such a bad film, I've given it two stars, which is one less than West Germany used to wear on their shirts when it was a country, and two more than the present day Germany should be allowed to wear as they have never won a world cup as "Germany". It makes you sick, it does.
