The Life & Crimes of Doris Payne (2013)

How does a poor, single, African-American mother from segregated 1950s America wind up as one of the worlds most notorious jewel thieves? A glamorous 81-year-old, Doris Payne is as unapologetic today about the nearly $2 million in jewels shes stolen over a 60-year career as she was the day she stole her first carat. With Payne now on trial for the theft of a department store diamond ring, filmmakers Kirk Marcolina and Matthew Pond probe beneath her consummate smile to uncover the secrets of her trade and what drove her to a life of crime. Stylish recreations, an extensive archive and candid interviews reveal how Payne managed to jet-set her way into any Cartier or Tiffanys from Monte Carlo to Japan and walk out with small fortunes. This sensational portrait exposes a rebel who defies societys prejudices and pinches her own version of the American Dream while she steals your heart.

The movie only reduces these things to their most simplistic terms, often doing so to push Payne as an inspirational or admirable figure. And that does an incredibly complicated human being a shameful disservice.

Doris Toumarkine 27 May 2014

Colorful if somewhat suspect portrait of African-American international jewel thief and fearless scammer Doris Payne is an amusing reminder that crime doesn't just belong to the usual suspects.

Linda Barnard 18 Jun 2014

As much a social and psychological study as a fascinating look at a woman who lived by her own rules.

Jamie Broadnax 06 Nov 2016

Think of the film 'Catch Me If You Can' meets 'Ocean's Eleven' with a twist. The jewelry thief is an unsuspecting, sweet, and gorgeous Black woman by the name of Doris Payne.

Sarah Gopaul 23 Oct 2018

This documentary is enjoyable because Payne is a firecracker. Even now her eyes sparkle as she recounts barely escaping arrest in Monte Carlo.
