I had the opportunity to see the The Leisure Seeker at TIFF prior to its worldwide opening. I thought it was a moving portrayal of a couple dealing with both onset dementia and cancer. It's truly one of the best road pictures that I've ever seen - creating a great balance of comedy and drama. Mirren and Sutherland were nothing less than remarkable. It was one of my favorite pics of the festival.

I think some of these reviews are a bit harsh. The subject matter was a difficult one, but many people now are faced with handling both dementia and cancer in their families. It was treated with respect and humour. I could certainly empathise with the characters going through this very difficult situation.

Sutherland's depiction of dementia is heartbreakingly realistic. The reviewer who thinks there is nothing new here hasn't loved a dementia person or was too close and couldn't stand the paiin. There are no new stories, this was beautifully done and edited perfectly. Watch it.

It occurred to me early on that The Leisure Seeker could effortlessly be adapted into a two-person, single-set stage play. But given the relatively inert material here, who'd want to do that?
