A fantastic horror/message film that at times terrifies with nothing more than a wide-open terrain and the howl of the arctic wind. It's a shame that Larry Fessenden is such a relative unknown in the horror world, while coasting hacks like Wes Craven have master status while churning out cinematic torture-tests like [i]Cursed[/i] and [i]Shocker[/i]. Fessenden yet again uses a cast of relative unknowns (except the always fantastic Ron Perlman) in the admirable low-key way that Romero used to have such a lock on. Oh, and the ending rules. I don't like it quite as much as [i]Wendigo[/i] (EVERYONE WATCH), but I can see it getting better with each viewing. If you like horrors of the mind over horrors of the flesh, Fessenden is for you.

I really liked this up until the last 5 or so minutes. It was really working for me up until then. I think Fessenden might be a good one to look out for in the future.

Damn. I was not ready for this movie. It's a really cool GO GREEN horror gem with a stellar/kick-ass cast lead by Ron Perlman and James LeGros. Slow build, that really goes for the wild ending. Don't let anyone tell you a damn thing about the plot. Just live it. Just love it.

After meeting Larry Fessenden a few months ago, I felt compelled to see one of his films. Since "Habit" and "Wendigo" have proven extremely difficult to find, I settled for "The Last Winter." And what I received was kind of a shock. I went in with little to no expectations, and what I received was a genuinely creepy thriller, one which proves that gore and endless nudity is not required to make something that scares an audience. When you think about what's REALLY happening here, I think what happens everyday on a scientific level is more terrifying than whatever the imagination can come up with.

As a film, Fessenden has mastered the art of low-budget artistry. This film looks gorgeous. As a companion piece to his last film, WENDIGO, this film explores the potentially horrific premise that the earth is striking back at humanity through the spirit world... in this case because of the damage wreaked on the environment. Lacks the strong character development of WENDIGO, but lots of great moments of suspense and unease.
