In the valleys of Appalachia, a battle is being fought over a mountain, the consequences of which affect every American; it's a battle that has taken innocent lives and threatens to take more. You can't look at those manmade scars and not feel your blood boil, and that anger flows throughout Bill Haney's fiery documentary "The Last Mountain."

The Last Mountain makes a powerful case against the coal mining industry in West Virginia. Films like this are largely preaching to the choir -- opponents are unlikely to go near it. But its importance cannot be underestimated.

That much of "The Last Mountain" actually is beautiful, with polished cinematography and deft editing, makes the medicine go down easier, but there's no doubt to some, it will still feel like medicine.
