The Last Mountain (2011)

In the valleys of Appalachia, a battle is being fought over a mountain, the consequences of which affect every American; it's a battle that has taken innocent lives and threatens to take more. It is a battle over protecting our health and environment from the destructive power of Big Coal. Mining and burning coal is at the epicenter of America's struggle to balance its energy needs with environmental and health concerns. Nowhere is that concern greater than in Coal River Valley, West Virginia, where a small but passionate group of ordinary citizens are trying to stop Big Coal corporations, like Massey Energy, from continuing the devastating practice of Mountain Top Removal.

Haney glides past the drama in the stories of those people.

Jennie Punter 21 Jul 2011

For the most part he (Haney) lets the people and images of Coal River Valley speak for themselves – and that's what gives The Last Mountain its eloquent power.

Bruce Demara 21 Jul 2011

The picture is as grim as the wasteland that remains after the "mountain top removal" process undertaken by coal companies to reveal the rich seams of coals that lie underneath.

Marshall Fine 02 Jun 2011

Well-made and, as a result, infuriating..Stark in its facts and unapologetic about its viewpoint. The filmmaker and his witnesses are very clear: Coal is killing the planet.

Nick Schager 30 May 2011

The director's righteous anger is less restrained than his conventional vérité aesthetics and less off-putting than his one-sided approach to the issues at hand - an advocacy for alternative wind-turbine energy is suspiciously sketchy - yet he smartly allows coal-exploiting bigwigs plenty of screen time to properly hang themselves.
