The Last Lions (2011)

In Botswana's Okavango Delta, an ostracized lioness and her two cubs must fight alone to survive - overcoming all manner of hazards. Their only defense is to escape to Duba Island -- and with that, an unknown future. The setting for this epic tale is one of the last regions where lions can live in the wild. Faced with dwindling land and increasing pressure from hunting, lions - like our lone lioness and her cubs - are approaching the brink of extinction.

The Last Lions turns Duba Island into a theater of survival, love, and adaptation.

I thought, right up to the end, that this was a straight documentary, that the filmmakers did not manipulate the facts of the lions' lives to make a more melodramatic story. But all that was undone, when, apparently feeling they owed family audiences a happy ending after the mother lion loses her cubs, the filmmakers miraculously arranged for one missing cub to reappear. I don't think that was factual; I felt manipulated. Otherwise a fascinating, gripping story of life in nature (red in tooth and claw, as they say). This film will be pretty intense for soft-hearted viewers â¦ by which I mean, if you shelter your children, you might want to rethink this as a family movie.

Words to describe "The Last Lions" are amazing, stunning, incredible, sad and real. Beverley and Dereck Joubert's experiences with the lions after living with them for so many years makes "The Last Lions" a leader in wildlife documentaries. The cinematography and editing were amazing. The movie is not showing where we live, so we drove 90 minutes to go see it and it was certainly worth the drive.

OMG! I thought happy and kind but really real, killing, two cubs will be dead, the king will be dead, and only one Mom and the last cub will survive. :(

Don't miss it, even if you have to drive a ways to see it. I wish this extraordinary film had wider distribution.
