Hilarious. Funniest movie on the list so far. Jerry Lewis is amazing in this.

I remembered this as a bad Jerry Lewis film, but in seeing it again this weekend, I discovered I was being way too generous. This is an awful Jerry Lewis film. And I'm a big fan. The story about a guy who gets his heart broke when he graduates from school so now he's afraid of women goes nowhere. He gets a job as a handyman at a all ladies hotel. Lots of sight gags follow as well as pointless self indulgent fantasy scenes that are just not funny. There's been a lot written about Jerrys incredbile set, but who cares if the story and the gags are so lame. How very disappointing that Jerry followed the brilliant "The Bellboy" directoral debut with this expensive, unfunny mess. I thought the commentary track might at least be interesting with Jerry's and (for some unknown reason) Steve Lawrence's commentary, but it isn't.

Lewis' shtick is an acquired taste, but regardless, his reputation as a film director rests largely on his first four pictures. For my money, this is the best of them and certainly his most impressive work as a filmmaker. A huge inspiration behind the incredible set pieces of Martin Scorsese "Gangs of New York" and Jean-Luc Godard's "Tout va bien."

In watching this movie, it occurred to me why many of Jerry Lewis' movies are shown infrequently. Many(like this) rely almost solely on slapstick humour, and in doing so the plot seems thin and almost like an afterthought. I can absolutely see why it was enjoyed, and I almost forget how handsome Lewis was as a young man, but all of the physical humour tends to make the situations so unrealistic that it borders on absurdist. I was surprised to see that Mel Brooks had a writing credit. It is still worth watching, especially as a family film(kids will love it) and also as an example of Lewis' directorial style. However, the star of this movie is the multi-level extremely expansive and elaborate set, the likes of which set a record cost at the time of $350K.
