While I've only ever seen one other Harold Lloyd film ("Safety Last"), this gem certainly can hold its own against the likes of Keaton's "The General", if not some of Chaplin's lesser works. What was probably most surprising (since the physical comedy was something I already knew he could do well), was that the antagonist of this film was perhaps one of the best I've ever seen in silent comedy.

A splendidly executed silent comedy filled with Lloyd's typical blend of great visual gags and characters. Entertaining throughout and as with all of Lloyd's features, well worth your time.

The Kid Brother is the story about a proud family of lawmen, the Hickorys. Who's the most respected and most reliable men in Hickoryville, The Father, Sheriff Jim, and his two sons Leo and Olin, who's following in their father's footsteps. But every family has it's black sheep, and in this case it's the youngest son, Harold (Harold Lloyd) who's big klutz and unfit to play along with his masculine family. One day when he pretends to be a sheriff, some medicine people mistakes him for the sheriff, and Harold plays along and gives them permission to perform at the town square. Something that his father would never had allowed, and that causes great consequences. Harold Lloyd is as always funny and inventive. With his trade mark glasses, he was what at that time (and also today) was considered a nerd. He's no Buster Keaton, but there's some pretty funny slapstick moments. Thumbs up.

An enjoyable entertainment, The Kid Brother uses an expertly placed camera and flawless staging of scenes to create a fast-paced, inventive, and satisfying film. Lloyd's antics feel fresh throughout as he makes ample use of the variety of objects, animals, and people around him. Not as heartfelt or transcendent as Chaplin, nor as sublime as the always underplaying Keaton, Lloyd offers contemporary viewers a perfectly accessible avenue into the world of silent comedies.
