The first sequel to the Claude Rains classic, while more modestly scaled than its predecessor, still receives a first-class treatment from director Joe May and, in many instances, surpasses the visual magic of the original.

Following up the superb feature 'The Invisible Man' with 'The Invisible Man Returns' is a no-brainer. It was nice to see the series didn't resurrect Claude Rains, but rather open a new tale with the same devious serum. Featuring Vincent Price in one of the earliest roles in his distinguished career, this film should be noted for expanding the 'Invisible Man' storyline rather than simply emulating it. I found the film entertaining in a murder mystery kind of way which changed the tone enough to minimmize comparisons to the original tale. In an age where sequels are generally a fraction of what their predecessors were, it is nice to look back and see how sequels should be done.

A long wait for a sequel, this is Vincent Price's first horror film role. However he appears all of a minute or two. It's his ofy melodramatic disembodied voice which carries the plot forward.
