The House I Live In (1957)

1935. Two families — Davydov's with three children and the newlyweds Lida and Dmitri Kashirin's — enter the new house on the outskirts of Moscow into a common communal apartment. The children grow up, and they and the adults around them are looking for their place in life, looking for answers to the questions of who to be and what to be, quarreling, making peace, building relationships, destroying them. Six years later, the peaceful lives of characters, with their joys and misfortunes, quarrels and reconciliations, and complex personal relationships, are blown up by a war that connects everyone at once, forcing them to see the meaning of their days, their attitudes to each other and their life values in a different way. For some of them, war is a fatal trait.

Jarecki is a stickler for sticking to his subject, or sub-subject, until it squeals like a leech victim.

Not nearly enough people will see this film...but they should.

By far THE best documentary/essay film I have seen this year. With Why We Fight, Eugene Jareki looked at social impacts of the Congressional Military Industrial Complex. He does the same with the Prison-Industrial complex and the War on Drugs. Well done and measured, it does not pull its punches, especially David Simon's (The Wire, Homicide: Life on the Street, former Baltimore Sun reporter) comments.

Every child should be educated in school with the truth about what drugs really do to you. When they get to high school, drug education should also include what their government does to them when they do drugs. It's my guess that the latter will have a far greater impact and reduction in drug abuse. Of course, it will also have the side effect of substantially increasing their contempt for their government, the police and especially politicians. The latter is very healthy, the first 2 are not.

This movie should be mandatory for all American citizens. It is absolutely mind blowing and eye-opening and will make you want to literally "do something about it". It's just a shame that none of us know where to start. But this is a gripping tale of a terrible injustice that is being done right here in our own country - The country that is acclaiming to be "land of the free". Will blow your mind. Very sad.
