The Horse's Mouth (1958)

Gulley Jimson is a boorish aging artist recently released from prison. A swindler in search of his next art project, he hunkers down in the penthouse of would-be patrons the Beeders while they go on an extended vacation; he paints a mural on their wall, pawns their valuables and, along with the sculptor Abel, inadvertently smashes a large hole in their floor. Jimson's next project is an even larger wall in an abandoned church.

An under rated classic.This film features my favorite Alec Guinness performance, a man mostly known by this generation as Obi Wan Kenobi. It's hilarious, and touching. It's easily one of the best films about art. It's kinda sad that 88% are not even interested in it.

In "The Horse's Mouth" Alec Guinness is Gulley Jimson, and Gulley Jimson is a miserable human being with a passion for painting ugly paintings. Guinness' characterization is something akin to a spoiled twelve-year-old who's drunk too much whiskey, and smoked too many cigarettes. It's more annoying than endearing, and wallowing in the self-absorbtion of the man, and hanging around his shrill friends got tiring after a while...until the picture redeems itself somewhere in the last half-hour or so. I'm still not eager to watch it again any time soon. Watch Guinness' far superior Ealing Studios comedies instead.

Fun dramatic comedy with Alec Guiness pulling all the stops making sure his character is selfish, funny, and sympathetic all at once. A great movie for anyone who's an artist or beyond.
