The Horse's Mouth (1958)

Gulley Jimson is a boorish aging artist recently released from prison. A swindler in search of his next art project, he hunkers down in the penthouse of would-be patrons the Beeders while they go on an extended vacation; he paints a mural on their wall, pawns their valuables and, along with the sculptor Abel, inadvertently smashes a large hole in their floor. Jimson's next project is an even larger wall in an abandoned church.

Classic 1958 British comedy (sorry, few jokes about bodily functions or... meat) starring Alec Guinness as artist Gully Jimson. He's just finished serving 30 days in jail-- they won't let him come back-- so he's off in search of lost paintings, a loan and the perfect wall to paint. Quote: "my better self keeps following me like a whipped dog."

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. If you have ever been artistically inspired you'd be hard pressed to not feel this film resonate with you. My art teacher in high school, Don Sanders, screened this film every year to his classes. I finally stole his VHS copy that he recorded off of TV. Years later I finally found him a commercial copy and sent it to him. I still have his original. I think it is imbued with some kind of magic.

It smacks more of an Ealing low-brow whimsical comedy than anything more artistic.

In "The Horse's Mouth" Alec Guinness is Gulley Jimson, and Gulley Jimson is a miserable human being with a passion for painting ugly paintings. Guinness' characterization is something akin to a spoiled twelve-year-old who's drunk too much whiskey, and smoked too many cigarettes. It's more annoying than endearing, and wallowing in the self-absorbtion of the man, and hanging around his shrill friends got tiring after a while...until the picture redeems itself somewhere in the last half-hour or so. I'm still not eager to watch it again any time soon. Watch Guinness' far superior Ealing Studios comedies instead.

I don't have much to say about this out-dated British comedy about artists.
