The Holy Girl (2004)

Amalia is an adolescent girl who is caught in the throes of her emerging sexuality and her deeply held passion for her Catholic faith. These two drives mingle when the visiting Dr. Jano takes advantage of a crowd to get inappropriately close to the girl. Repulsed by him but inspired by an inner burning, Amalia decides it is her God-given mission to save the doctor from his behavior, and she begins to stalk Dr. Jano, becoming a most unusual voyeur.

Underneath it all there's a distinct sense that we've been privileged enough to watch a young girl's awakening from holy innocence into flawed, imperfect and brazenly sexual adulthood.

one of the best films i've seen in the last few years. a clear directorial style and vision, with fine acting and a really great use of sound. it is so subtle and whimsical, and the camera so unobtrusive, that it may need a few viewings to appreciate the treasures of this little gem. Lucrecia Martel shows herself to be one of the leading lights of the Argentine new cinema.

I wonder about the synopsis here: the girls in their Catholic group are concerned with finding their missions, but Amalia's remains unclear to me even to the end. Is she saving him or seducing him as punishment for his sins?
