Paul Giamatti is amazing as usual, but i have mixed feelings about it. i would suggest another film, unless you like Giamatti as much as i do.

Good performances from all involved, especially Giamatti, but the story takes way too long to get going. Honestly, I had a hard time mustering enthusiasm for any of the characters and had to force myself to finish watching it. Maybe the obsessional hawk training works better on a metaphorical level if you're reading the source material for this movie - the book by Harry Crews.

Paul Giamatti is good with what he's given, and so is Michelle Williams. Michael Pitt, who is brilliant in every role I've seen him in, is really underused here, and as a result he melts into the movie rather than standing out like he should have. Julian Goldberger's script and direction are chaotic. Character relationships and motives are consistently hazy, and the plot structure is nonexistent. This is a boring, confusing blob of a film filled with talented actors being misused.

At first, it seems like another Sundance-lite indie about a lonely schlub with an eccentric habit and a cute young lady for a friend. However, the film takes a turn with a tragic event and it becomes really compelling. Paul Giamatti gives a spellbinding performance. Combine one of the saddest faces in the business with his ease acting alongside a flighty bird of prey, and you have something affecting and powerful.

So, the premise is this: George desperately wants to train a hawk and, despite failing 4 times resulting in 4 separate hawk's deaths, he is confident that this time will be different. Sideplots involve the death of a handicapped nephew, his failure to earn respect and esteem of his peers, and a budding relationship with a junky college student. It's all quite bizarre, but it's also captivating if for no other reason than Giamatti's performance and the spectacle of a man's relationship with a hawk. The hawk is George's ticket to respect and its presence is an essential extension of his character, and depending on your ability to buy into that (even in strange amusement), the movie is pretty strong.
