The director and cast list is certainly impressive and the performances (such as they are for Downey Jr and Duval for example - barely seen at all despite their considerable talents) very good - it's just the film lacks any excitement or tension. Not Grisham's finest hour by any standards.

Drew H 25 Dec 2007

Disappointing film, especially since the entire cast is made up of famously talented actors.

David Edelstein 14 Oct 2001

A fascinatingly strange and chaotic ballet set to familiar noir motifs.

I thought this was a pretty solid legal drama/thriller. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but it was good.

Altman surprisingly chose a John Grisham novel to adapt for the big screen...mixed results...not a terrible movie, but certainly not a masterpiece.
