The Five Senses (1999)

Interconnected stories examine situations involving the five senses. Touch is represented by a massage therapist who is treating a woman, while her daughter accidentally loses the woman's pre-school daughter in the park. The older daughter meets a voyeur (vision), a professional house-cleaner has an acute sense of smell, a cake maker has lost her sense of taste, and an older man is losing his hearing.

The second feature by the openly gay Canadian director interweaves in a rather schematic mode but with elegant style the stories of five troubled characters, each standing for one of the senses.

wow what an amazing movie. i just absolutely loved this movie. I just saw it, literaly seconds ago. Acting is superb, the themes and symbols are spectacular. beautiful.

did you ever wonder why we don't even get most of what we see, hear, touch, taste??? five senses are not reliable for happiness and more than often, what you see is not what you get...

Okay, not great. It's been compared to Kieslowski, but it's not nearly as complex or beautiful. Interesting concept though, tying the five senses to five intertwining stories.

The Five Senses is your (mostly) typical indie urban drama with intersecting lives and stories. The vibe is very late nineties and overall it is nicely done in terms of acting and directing. Something about it makes me rate it a bit higher than films like "13 Conversations About One Thing". I think (contrary to some other reviewers) that it has more heart and a better sense of humor than similar dramas.
