The Final Test (1953)

Legendary England cricketer Sam Palmer (Jack Warner) is due to bat in his final test match against Australia. He is desperate for his son Reggie (Ray Jackson) to see his final innings. But Reggie prefers poetry to cricket and when he is offered the opportunity to read his poetry to England's greatest playwright Alexander Whitehead (Robert Morley) on the last day of the test, the relationship between father and son is tested to the limit. As Sam prepares for his final knock, the conflict with his son weighs heavily on his mind, but he is also upset over England's young batsman and ladies-man, Syd Thompson (George Relph), dating the woman whom he hopes to marry.

If a film could be labeled as charming then this is it - old test player playing his last test match and his son wants to go and see a poet - played by the superb Robert Morley - some really funny one liners and this proved to be a massive six hit for me. Also lovely cameo from Richard Wattis trying to explain cricket to an american. He didn't get it, and that remains true to this very day....thankfully!

If you enjoy cricket then this is a fun movie, it begins well with some good dry British humour as an American tourist gets to grips understanding the game. Robert Morley is in good early comic form and this has to rank in the top 10 cricket movies of all time. (if there is ten!)

This is a vey typical film by the Brits, comedic elements, light-hearted and a very interesting monologue later in the scene about the art versus brawn. Very enjoyable and by one of the British greatest directors.
