When the three most feared fighters in the land are defeated by The First Family and leader Chen Tien Wei is elected Chief of the Martial World, the treachery that follows will find the noble leader attempting to uncover the traitor that has poisoned the clan from the inside in a dazzling martial arts epic from Chen Chi Hua. One of the greatest 'B' films of all time, with an 'A' performance by Peter Lorie. This film hits on a handful of my favorite motifs: the immigrant experience, faces, masks, plastic surgery, criminality, blind insight, the list goes on. In the Face Behind The Mask director Robert Florey has concocted the perfect amalgam of Charlie Chaplan's "City Lights" and Fritz Lang's "M."

I'm not sure why this is dated 2003, it's 1941 and Lorre is outstanding prior to being completely typecast. Here he plays a kind immigrant forced into a life of crime, something he finds he has a real talent for, and finally finding redemption in an act of cruel vengeance.

An underated a near forgotton film. Peter Lorre isn't an insane lunatic or bumbling side kick,for once. Here he's a sympathatic immigrant to America,shunned by society because of his hideously burned face. He turns to a life a crime to makes ends meet,and falls in love with a blind girl. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. (If you can find it. )
