In the near future, due to a breakthrough scientific discovery by Dr. Thomas Harbor, there is now definitive proof of an afterlife. While countless people have chosen suicide to reset their existence, others try to decide what it all means. Among them is Dr. Harbor's son Will, who has arrived at his father's isolated compound with a mysterious young woman named Isla. There, they discover the strange acolytes who help Dr. Harbor with his experiments.

[It's] built on an ingenious premise, and if McDowell occasionally falters in how he chooses to explore its boundaries, it's still an inquisitive piece of existential sci-fi.

The film's ideas feel less formed once you peel past its high concept. Still, what's there is likely to keep you thinking about it after the movie's end, and that makes it easily worth exploring.

What a post-credits scene, am I right!? ... *cricket* The Discovery gives the viewers an assortment to grapple with. The subject matter is heady and intriguing, but the delivery feels stale and the tone is unsteady. There is some gloomy beauty here (in the look and score), but even that eventually weighs things down as opposed to benefitting. Writing-wise, the script could be less lumbering, but the performances are fine and the central romance does present some welcome moments. The "big reveal" ending comes across a sloppy mess, and really shows what the majority of the movie should've honed in on instead of force feeding it all at once. Ambitious, yes, but regrettably lacking.

A really great premise and superb cast traipse through what ultimately doesn't add up to much either emotionally or intellectually. It's a shame, there really could have been something here but there's little sense of direction outside of its few roughly sketched ideas.
