The Dark Backward (1991)

A man pursues stand-up comedy encouraged by his fellow garbage man. Though his friend, who accompanies him on accordion, continues to tell him how great he is, he actually stinks. When the "comedian" grows a third arm out of his back, the friend uses this twist to get him signed up with a sleazy talent agent, and it begins to look like his career is on the move, even though his girlfriend has left him.

This movie had the potential to be a really dark movie with an interesting anti-hero, but the cheesy dialogs and cheaply made action sequences ruined it.

Hard to find but worth the effort. This is one of the movies that defined my childhood.

Mr. Rifkin's direction does display, in addition to an appreciation of Mr. Lynch and perhaps John Waters, a promising eye for design and a taste for the unusual. With less noxious material and a less patronizing manner, those talents would amount to a lot more.

Great film! I love the concept of the character and the execution! Sam Raimi did an amazing job. But, did Darkman forget about the skin working at night? After he became the "hero" he never once used the liquid skin at night time and was always worried about it melting at 99 minutes. After the accident, he completely forgets that i guess cause you never once get to see him us liquid skin at night or in a dark room. Very confusing and the only reason it doesn't get a 10.

My absolute favorite movie ever! Alan Rifkin does a beautiful job drawing you into his Blumps fueled journey. He takes you down a bizarre path, stops you, then takes you again. The cinematography is exceptional. The actors were all top-notch. I heard that Judd Nelson was first rejected--too much of a 'pretty boy'. He was desperate for the role and so went to comedy clubs in character. That's dedication. This movie is wonderfully crafted. It achieves a level of depravity that rivals John Waters. Bill Paxton is a human cockroach. He plays it spectacularly. The script is genius. The writing brings you to new levels of absurdity. I'm laughing, and not "on the inside". This movie is not for the feint as it is definitely a journey of the senses. I actually own 2 copies in case I lose one.
