The Dark Backward (1991)

A man pursues stand-up comedy encouraged by his fellow garbage man. Though his friend, who accompanies him on accordion, continues to tell him how great he is, he actually stinks. When the "comedian" grows a third arm out of his back, the friend uses this twist to get him signed up with a sleazy talent agent, and it begins to look like his career is on the move, even though his girlfriend has left him.

I don't particularly care what anyone thinks about this film, I think it's brilliant, and if you disagree, you're wrong. Never has there been a more accurate depiction of the showbiz industry, ever. Only is it after you've lost everything that you'll finally find acceptance, and it takes a LOT of effort to fall that far.

Certainly not Raimi at his best, but some knowing genre nods and an array of great effects make up much of the deficit.

One of the weirdest, grossest, most unconventional movies of the 1990's. Over-the-top, surreal black comedy may be too bizarre for certain tastes, but highly recommeded for those who like this sort of horror/comedy/musical.

Rifkin has fashioned a crawly little movie that underscores the Faustian price of fame in a way that few recent films have managed.

A bizarro comedy featuring a sweaty and nerded out Judd Nelson as a comedian who grows a third arm out of his back. Bill Paxton is splendid as the accordian accompanying friend. Offbeat and grotesque this is pretty funny.
