The Dark Backward (1991)

A man pursues stand-up comedy encouraged by his fellow garbage man. Though his friend, who accompanies him on accordion, continues to tell him how great he is, he actually stinks. When the "comedian" grows a third arm out of his back, the friend uses this twist to get him signed up with a sleazy talent agent, and it begins to look like his career is on the move, even though his girlfriend has left him.

Pretty innovative. 3d printers in 1990, excellent latex effects, Liam Neeson as leading man comic character. Very much ahead of it's time. Editing is crisp, to have as much plot as it does in 90 minutes is a testament. Photography looks very good and all characters are developed relatively well. All performances are solid, Neeson shows excellent range. The idea of building a new city on the carcass of an old one is straight out of Robocop, but the movie feels fresh anyways. Somehow it feels like Evil Dead too.

Mr. Rifkin's direction does display, in addition to an appreciation of Mr. Lynch and perhaps John Waters, a promising eye for design and a taste for the unusual. With less noxious material and a less patronizing manner, those talents would amount to a lot more.

Cool movie. definitely different. The story is pretty strange and a little slow, the acting is way over the top but it somehow was very satisfying. I think the appeal is watching Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton playing such weird roles and laying it all out there.

There may be some cheesy dialogue and scenes to be found here, but I found Darkman and extremely entertaining film. It has a great original plot and brings us back to some of the great old school films such as Phantom of the Opera. Sam Raimi perfectly incorporates his trade mark camera work and dark humour. Great film with some awesome action sequences that were way ahead of it's time.
