The Colonel (2006)

'Reformed Colonel' Raoul Duplan is found dead in Paris, a couple of decades after Algeria's struggle for independence was won from France. Assigned to investigate, Lieutenant Galois receives the diary of Lieutenent Guy Rossi, who served under Duplan in Algeria in 1956, and has been reported as MIA since 1957. The revelations in Rossi's diary far surpass Duplan's actions in Algeria, and give insight on how dirty Algeria's War for Independence really was.

Well worth a see. Wonderfully tragic narrative giving insight into French colonial politics and human nature.

Far too muted and reticent for a film about colonial occupation, mass carnage and secret military interrogation and torture, Mon Colonel is nevertheless a well meaning anti-war movie with integrity and conscience.

Real nice movie. Some of the scenes are a tribute to the "Battle of Algiers". The plot is quite simple the young officer dilemna between consciousness and efficiency. The movie then mix several characters, Massu, HÃ©lie de Saint-Marc, AussarÃ©s, Trinquier, Teitgen, Bigeard etc... Stories close to famous cases like Audain are in the background. The crude imagery of "Intimate ennemy" is missing, horror needs to be shown as it was.
