I can't think of a better portrait of contemporary Paris or the zeitgeist of 2001-'04 than Chris Marker's wise and whimsical 58-minute 2004 video...no one can film people in the street better than Marker or combine images with more grace and finesse.

The Case of the Grinning Cat is about as haphazardly and half-heartedly interesting as Marker's fleeting interest in and overview of protesting and demonstrations. Though it's a luxury that a documentarian exists who would even bring us the story of a mystery graffiti cat's involvement with anti-war protesting, and though the ending is Marker at his teasingly poignant best, the mystery in the end is all there is. What really makes this DVD worth renting is the extra short called Three Cheers for the Whale, a 16-minute slide-show poem about the history of whale slaughter.

Little-known to mainstream audiences, French director Chris Marker has been making charming and witty photo-essay films for decades now, and his latest - Chats perchés (The Case Of The Grinning Cat) - manages to straddle whimsy with profundity. A pioneer of the film format (and a true antecedent to the likes of Michael Moore), he's a refreshing tonic for those who are tired of the brand of smug and smart-alecky documentaries which tell us what to think. This guy tells us to ask questions.

Feels like Marker's attempt to implicitly reconcile his own advanced age...one is bound to see history repeat itself in full, ignorant swing, if one lives long enough.
