Can a 12-year old lad who wishes he were a girl navigate the mean streets of Manila? Maxi cooks, cleans, and sews for his father and older brothers who are petty criminals. He's sweet, clever and hardworking, at ease with being gay, pinning a flower in his hair, swinging his hips when he walks, vamping with friends. He's seen adults hug and kiss and he's watched romantic movies, so on the verge of puberty, he develops a crush on Victor, a kindly young cop. Maxi's heart and loyalties are on a collision course: Victor is investigating crimes that lead him to Maxi's family. In the land of the morning, is there a place for this child of the sun returning?

When I started watching this movie I thought, "Oh man this is bad!"... but as I continued watching it, the movie started to grow on me. The story is actually very good, and if it wasn't for the less than average acting and poor cinematography, I would have considered it a masterpiece. It is a subtle, sensitive movie about a boy struggling to choose between his family and his first love. Glad I saw it.

best gay pinoy movie i've seen so far. must see! am proud how this movie has gotten so many good awards & an oscar nominee. wonderful film. may there be many more like this made.

It made me melt, it made me cry, it's touching, it's a beautiful and yet simple story, full of feeling (or am I too emotional?)... Well, it's one of those movies that I rate the highest, definitely.
