It isn’t unusual for a good premise to have a faulty execution. The Benefactor suffers from a conclusion that feels inauthentic to the real perils of addiction, as well as to its own story. The only remarkable thing about it is Gere, who really should stick to filmmakers worthy of his talent.

Fanning (criminally underused) and James have so little meat to their roles, they end up as ciphers while Gere has a ball as a drug-addicted tycoon on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

I really enjoyed the movie. The story was fascinating and the cinematography was beautiful. I found Richard Gere's performance to be one of his best. It was a very different role from his usual roles. I would like to see more these smaller budget films made.

Underwhelming. Literally nothing really happens in this movie. Spoilers ahead. A now older man has memories of the two friends he had who died in an accident he caused. Always fond of their teenage daughter, when she re enters his life as a young married and pregnant woman, he tries to assist them financially while his own drug dependence slowly become a worsening problem. That's it. Nothing drastic happens. No one is not what they seem. Dakota is barely in it. The wife had has her baby and the old man gets help. There no need to watch this now.

Richard Gere is zowaar het hoogte en dieptepunt van The Benefactor, want hij speelt de andere rollen zo van de tafel, maar doet dit in een drama die alleen niet weet wat precies te moeten doen met zijn ellende en emotionele stoornis.
