In a small village in a valley everyone who reaches the age of 70 must leave the village and go to a certain mountain top to die. If anyone should refuse they would disgrace their family. Old Orin is 69. This winter it is her turn to go to the mountain. But first she must make sure that her eldest son Tatsuhei finds a wife.

Quite exceptional. This was my first Imamura and I am really excited about checking out the rest of his oeuvre. This film was very savage, but punctuated with beauty and humanity. Yes, humanity. A masterpiece.

Shakespearean. Not a false note, not a slack moment. Sumiko Sakamoto carries the movie on her back, as her character carries her family on her back. But each character is richly drawn, idiosyncratic, odd and human. There's even a goofy subplot to balance the darkness of mob action, murder and the fulcrum of the film --- the abandonment of the elderly at the top of a mountain. After you've watched this movie, you know you've been somewhere.
