A tragic and thought-provoking examination of poverty-induced euthanasia. And yet, its presentation is almost an advanced kabuki theatre. The colored lighting was very dramatic but the settings felt very staged (as per the aforementioned kabuki style) despite being pretty realistic.

Touching and exhausting, this is a movie that would scarcely be made today. The use of nonverbal dialogues for extended periods of time absolutely heightens the tension and drama felt by the characters.

I have never seen a movie quite like this for its intense mix of raw, naked human emotionality and its simultaneous tender loving care.

There's something magical about the way Imamura portrays rural life in Japan in this film. It hits you in the gut, and stays with you long after the credits have rolled. Plenty of scenes that make you stop and go 'wait a second', but it's all blended together nicely with: 1) a solid script, 2) perfectly executed humour, and 3) a visually stunning landscape.

Shohei Imamura present a great tale, the struggle of a mother to accomplish all the necessity of your family, before her death. With the perfect direction, and screenplay, The Ballad of Narayma, show too the sexual perform of her sons and the violent way of life that the community live together. Narayma, bring too a strange dark humor, shocking scenes and the difficulty of a son to comply an cold tradition. Certainly, deserve win the Palme d'or in 1983. Fresh.
