In a small village in a valley everyone who reaches the age of 70 must leave the village and go to a certain mountain top to die. If anyone should refuse they would disgrace their family. Old Orin is 69. This winter it is her turn to go to the mountain. But first she must make sure that her eldest son Tatsuhei finds a wife.

The elder woman prepares for the Obasute tradition (where she is going to be left alone in the mountains until dead). The sorroundings stories talks about the life of her 19th century japanese village and family. Social paradigms, like Obasute, are shown (family, marriage, law, ecology, sexual initiation, birth, gods) and comparison with ours is inevitable. The film has many nature shots (rivers, snakes, wind) that completes it as a poem, a ballad. The actings are absolutely well done.
