In a small village in a valley everyone who reaches the age of 70 must leave the village and go to a certain mountain top to die. If anyone should refuse they would disgrace their family. Old Orin is 69. This winter it is her turn to go to the mountain. But first she must make sure that her eldest son Tatsuhei finds a wife.

Imamura's best film, and indeed is hard to forget. Serious, light, humourous and touching, yet it blens beautifully. It seems to be forgotten now, yet was famous in the mid 80's.

There's something magical about the way Imamura portrays rural life in Japan in this film. It hits you in the gut, and stays with you long after the credits have rolled. Plenty of scenes that make you stop and go 'wait a second', but it's all blended together nicely with: 1) a solid script, 2) perfectly executed humour, and 3) a visually stunning landscape.

Apparently, Shohei Imamura is one of the great post-war Japanese film makers, so I am a bit ashamed to admit that this Palme d'Or winner is the first of his films I have seen. Ballad of Narayama is a brutal, messy, painful, sometimes darkly funny look at life and death and survival in a place where food and resources can only support a finite number and every choice is a difficult one.

I felt sorry for these people.. what a weird tradition to send old people who their life length is counting days up to the mountain' summit to die.. the worst part is that they thought that it is a sacred way to die..
