The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman's Portrait Photography (2017)

Portrait photographer Elsa Dorfman found her medium in 1980: the larger-than-life Polaroid Land 20x24 camera. For the next 35 years, she captures the 'surfaces' of those who visit her studio: families, Beat poets, rock stars, and Harvard notables. As pictures begin to fade and her retirement looms, Dorfman gives Errol Morris an inside tour of her backyard archive.

Ms. Dorfman emerges as an artist of deep compassion, empathy, humor and wisdom.

Jeffrey M. Anderson 20 Jul 2017

It manages to feel quietly moving and quietly profound in unexpected ways, and I think it is Morris's best film in a long time.

Chloe Schama 28 Jun 2017

The film is tinged with a sense of fragility -- the luckiness of the shot, the delicate nature of the prints, the high probability that someone is blinking, and the very nature of photography itself.

Matt Brennan 29 May 2017

Errol Morris films Dorfman and her work with a rapt attentiveness that maps the nostalgic and regretful stirrings of her soul.

Robin Clifford 11 Jul 2017

...about a true artist for which her beloved cameras were "the implement that allows you to eat the soup. It is not the soup,"
