A dark comedy that’s equal parts amusing and disturbing. Stearns is ambitious in the tricky tonal balance he aims to strike here – shocking us in detached, deadpan fashion – and his story wobbles a bit by the end, but the points he’s making couldn’t be clearer or timelier.

The film’s calm brutality is effective. Plot-wise, some punches are telegraphed, while others are not. The satire is a spinning wheel kick I didn’t see coming. Black belts all around.

In the final third, as the plot accelerates and moves toward more purely outrageous acts, Casey’s awakening should feel like freedom from the stultifying smallness of his old life. Instead, it mostly just feels like another kind of box, and an ugly one, too; less artful, all offense.

I like its ambition, but it's a pretty big misfire for two reasons, I'd say. One big problem is that the film can't seem to make up its mind whether you're supposed to care about the characters or laugh at them, and tries to have it both ways. The very stylized dialogue and shtick-y performances made it impossible for me to see the characters as real people, so all of the emotional beats rang false. Second, it really goes off the rails in the third act. The plot turns are pretty contrived and hard-to-swallow. Rather than having a bunch of events-for-the-sake-of-being-eventful, I wish the story had zoomed in more on Eisenberg's character, who remains frustratingly opaque throughout.
