The Adventures of Tartu (1943)

British Captain Terence Stevenson accepts an assignment even more dangerous than his everyday job of defusing undetonated bombs. Fluent in Romanian and German and having studied chemical engineering, he's parachuted into Romania to assume the identity of Captain Jan Tartu, a member of the fascist Iron Guard. Tartu makes his way to Czechoslovakia to steal the formula of a new Nazi poison gas and sabotage the factory of its manufacturing.

Robert Donat, Valerie Hobsen and Glynis Johns help keep this espionage thriller entertaining. At the same time though, the grim behind enemy lines setting (interesting focus on wartime Czechoslovakia) doesn't always mix well with the lighter elements. Overall though it remains unique and suspenseful and is worthwhile, especially if you enjoy the leads.

The Adventures of Tartu is an excellent film. It is about a British soldier who is fluent Rumanian and German that goes undercover at a German factory. Robert Donat and Valerie Hobson give amazing performances. The screenplay is well written. Harold S. Bucquet did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and romance. The Adventures of Tartu is a must see.

Standard WWII espionage tale replet with predictable plot, ham acting and one dimensional Nazis. At least the climatic scene was suspenseful..
